Migraines are affecting millions of people in the UK. The BBC has stated that many of these are being caused by taking too many painkillers. They feel that people are taking medication to treat their headaches and when a headache returns worse than ever, more medication is being used.

While taking medication is usually the first place someone turns to when a headache occurs, in some cases, this may not be the best idea. Medication is not addressing the underlying condition, but rather is just covering up the pain.

The Overuse of Migraine Medication

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) has noted that medication overuse (also called rebound) headaches are becoming more and more common. In fact, they have included them in their first guidelines for relieving headaches. They note that these types of headaches are hard to differentiate from other headache types and often start out as tension headaches that can lead to migraines in the long run.

Other countries report that as much as 5% of the population are possibly being affected by this kind of a headache. The World Health Organization reported that painkillers, rather than helping, are making people feel even worse. The leader of the NICE panel was reported as saying that this becomes a vicious cycle of getting a worse headache, then taking more medication, then the headache becomes worse and worse, and a person keeps taking medication to get through it, not realizing the medication is the problem all along.

Where to Find Real Migraine Relief

A good place to start if a person is suffering from migraines or any kind of headache condition is to make an appointment to see an upper cervical chiropractor. We can examine a patient to see if the source of the headaches is coming from a misalignment of the upper neck vertebrae. If this is the case, a gentle method is used to realign the bones. Realignment often leads to a decrease in headaches and migraines. Some see them go away entirely once the body is back in alignment.
