Types of Migraine Relief

  1. On the spot relief care after the pain begins – these include medications such as painkillers and anti-nausea drugs.  More natural options include the use of essential oils or herbs once the pain has set in.
  2. Preventative therapies – some migraine medications are designed for daily use to try and prevent future attacks.  Migraine sufferers might also benefit from keeping a food diary to try and identify any potential triggers to avoid.

No matter which relief approach you choose, if it does not get to the root cause of the problem, migraines will keep coming back over and over again.  Is there a relief care option that can address the cause of migraines?

The Spine and Migraines

One of the major purposes of the spine is to protect the spinal cord.  In fact, our whole central nervous system is so critical to our function that it is entirely encased in bone from the top of the head to your tailbone.  If one of the vertebrae in your spine misalign, which can happen as a result of an accident or injury or just wear and tear, it can put abnormal pressure on the spinal cord.  This is especially critical at the very top of your spine.  The topmost vertebra, your atlas, forms a protective ring around the brainstem.  This can cause signals within the brain to become distorted and can result in the many symptoms associated with migraines.

The upper cervical chiropractic care we provide takes a very specific and thorough look at the alignment of the atlas.  This is because we know how important atlas alignment is to the overall ability of your body to function normally.  Our adjustments address the underlying cause of many people’s migraines.  By correcting the atlas alignment, the pressure on the brainstem and spinal cord is removed.  This can result in a decrease in migraine attacks, or even in complete relief.
